Chateau de Chenonceau.

Fans of CW's Reign (or, well, history) will appreciate this chateau in particular... Held by the French monarchy, this chateau was gifted to Diane de Poitiers (Bash's mom!) by King Henry II. After Henry's death, Queen Catherine de Medici (of the Italian banking family) seized it back, sending Diane to live at Chateau Chaumont instead. Catherine was known for her brilliant party planning skills, and as her favored residence, this chateau was the site of countless spectacular parties.

One exhibit within the chateau emphasized the lives of the powerful women who lived here over the centuries, from queens, princesses, and royal mistresses, to patron of the arts and sciences Louise Dupin, also known as "The Enlightenment Lady." Such a rare treat to learn about a royal residence through the lens of the women who lived and loved there.

Chateau de Cheverny.

My favorite part about visiting Chateau de Cheverny was learning that it is still inhabited by descendants of the original family! Real people actually live in this fairytale home! It's hard to imagine, especially as I sit here in my little one bedroom DC apartment. The tour included bits and pieces of the current owners' lives, like the (very 1990s) wedding dress and veil, pictured a few photos below, from their wedding. Their residential wing isn't included on the tour, but you know I got as close as I could to see if I could snag a glimpse of this elegant luck. But oh, to imagine the lives of the people who are lucky enough to spend their lives here...

^ Included this photo only because it's so unbelievable. Apparently that skull is a prehistoric stag-like creature's head, hung at the actual height the animal would have been. For reference, I'm 5'1". Terrifying!!!!

And then it was on to our last chateau of the day, which as a fan of the CW show Reign I particularly enjoyed........
